You'll Never Guess What Peter Did This Weekend

On Sunday I said to Meg, "You know how when you and your friends get together, you like to do your hair or nails? Well Peter and his friends like to give each other lectures."

And that's what he did Sunday afternoon. He and his friends from the Tea Room--their dorm lounge--are taking turns giving one hour lectures on their area of expertise. Peter talked about Pre-Newtonian Cosmology. That means how people viewed the earth's place in space before Newton, or something like that. Peter has now surpassed his teacher. Half the time I don't know what he's talking about.

His area of interest is the History of Philosophy and Science, which is actually a major at the University of Chicago. He hasn't taken any classes in this yet because he's only a freshman and still working his way through the general requirements, but he's already got a good amount of knowledge on the topic because that's what he wanted to read about while he was home for high school.

So here's Peter, perhaps a future professor, giving his first lecture in a classroom at the U of Chicago to around 20 friends. This clip is from the end of his talk. If you want to see all of it, here's the link to all the installments on YouTube. Be prepared--the camera is sitting on a desk pretty far away from the action.

No wonder they gave him a scholarship. Any kid who wants to give lectures in his spare time must be a great student to teach. I see a successful academic career ahead of him :-)

Go Peter! You are an inspiration to me and, perhaps more importantly, to my 8 year-old son.

Completely unrelated to the content of the post or the lecture, I just wanted to share my amusement with myself: seeing his e-mail address, I first read it as "Poet Ice Xplosion" and wondered what on earth that might mean.

Okay, back to your regularly scheduled discussion.

Wow. How great. He's very confident and intelligent. Way to go mom!
Is Peter on Facebook? Both of my homeschool graduates hang out there some, and Ashley's website is www.homeschoolblogger.com/PinkFlamingo/

I'd like to comment, but my fingers are too busy pushing my jaw back up! I think I missed this part of college. You know, the part where the kids lecture to each other for fun. I must have been busy getting my nails done. I think it's time to head back for my REAL degree now. Geez.
