I love Slumdog Millionaire for its honesty about India. Here's a link to a BBC News video about the kids in the movie and their real homes in the slums of Mumbai. And here's a clip about their visit to the Academy Awards last night. Maybe Slumdog Millionaire will be this century's Uncle Tom's Cabin for the slum issues of India. Here's an update on how life has not changed for the slum-dwelling celebrities.
My whole family has been to India several times--Meg spent a month with a family in North India a couple summers ago. When she watched the clip of the kids at the Oscars, she laughed, "They sound just like the kids I know!" We started a ministry a few years back to raise funds and awareness for those who work among the poor in India.
Here's a slide show of the pictures Meg took on her trip:

My daughter is from India, adopted from Pune in the southern region. We love the culture and look forward to taking our whole family back when the children are a little older.
Thanks for your blog - I found you b/c of your education quote blog. Now I want to live in a church, too!
Jamie
i'm quite jealous. in an unsinful way, though. i would love for us to travel there. we have many friends with families that would put us up there. i'm afraid my wife and kids would focus on their own starving, if we went now. they don't even like pop-Indian food. of course, i've intentionally eaten bugs on many occasions. when it's presented graciously, doing so makes it taste better...
love the vid. is it okay to be proud to know you guys, even just by way of the blog?
Jamie,
I'm glad you found me! Let me say that living in a church can be fun until winter hits and you have to think about heating bills! We heat the room we're in (and we try to consolidate that as much as possible) so that means one room can be nice and toasty, but if you have to go to another room, you can see your breath!
Mister Dad,
That is a very nice thing to say, thank you! And if you ever get a chance to go to India, you should. The people are very hospitable. They would take very good care of you. I always pack stash food just in case. :) And since I don't like spices, I tone everything down with more rice and bread. The hard part is the expensive plane ticket to get there, but once in India, living is very inexpensive.
oh, and Jamie,
I meant to comment on your daughter from Pune. That's wonderful. How old is she now? We've been all over India, but not that city.
How inspiring!
I really want to see the movie. I'm fascinated by India. I really want to go!
